When we set out to design KSTR-IMX93, our goal was clear: create a powerful, open, and energy-efficient Single Board Computer for the next generation of edge AI and IoT applications. We wanted a board that could handle advanced workloads while maintaining low power consumption and offering the flexibility developers need for real-world deployments.

That’s where Nordic Semiconductor came in. Their technology has become a cornerstone of our design philosophy for this project, complementing the i.MX93 SoC perfectly.

Advanced Wireless Connectivity

Thanks to Nordic Semiconductor’s latest wireless solutions, the KSTR-iMX93 delivers robust and flexible connectivity for modern IoT and edge applications. The board supports a combination of BLE, Wi-Fi, cellular IoT, and Thread through Nordic’s proven portfolio of communication chips.

At the core of this connectivity are modules built on:

  • nRF5340 – a dual-core Bluetooth LE and multiprotocol SoC that enables ultra-reliable short-range wireless communication and supports advanced features like Bluetooth LE Audio and Thread.
  • nRF9151 – a cellular IoT (LTE-M/NB-IoT) modem with integrated GNSS, providing long-range connectivity and positioning capabilities for remote monitoring and mobile devices.
  • nRF7002 – a Wi-Fi 6 companion IC that adds seamless 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz connectivity to embedded designs, making it easy to bridge local networks or connect directly to cloud services.

Together, these components allow the KSTR-iMX93 to act as a versatile communication hub - capable of connecting across short-range, local, and wide-area networks with minimal power consumption. This ensures reliable data exchange and control even in demanding industrial or field environments, empowering developers to build truly connected, intelligent systems.

Stability and Ecosystem Support

For engineers, reliability starts with the development environment. Nordic offers one of the most mature and well-documented SDKs on the market - the nRF Connect SDK, built on Zephyr RTOS. This strong foundation allows for rapid integration of new features while ensuring that every component is well supported and thoroughly tested.

Just as important is the community. Nordic’s developer ecosystem, anchored by the Nordic DevZone, is active and responsive - their engineers provide quick, concrete assistance when challenges arise. This means smoother integration, fewer surprises, and shorter development cycles for our users.

Designed for Energy Efficiency

The KSTR-IMX93 is tailored for edge and IoT environments, where balancing performance with energy efficiency is key. Nordic’s chips are designed from the ground up for low-power operation, making them the ideal complement to the i.MX93’s architecture.

Whether your device runs on battery or is deployed in a constrained industrial setting, the combination of Nordic’s energy-optimized modules and our platform ensures reliable, efficient performance without compromise.

Seamless Integration with i.MX93

We’ve refined the interplay between wireless connectivity and compute performance. Nordic’s modules integrate seamlessly with the i.MX93, particularly in BLE and Wi-Fi applications.

This tight integration enables fast prototyping and stable communication, crucial in production environments where reliability is non-negotiable. Whether you’re building an industrial gateway, a connected sensor hub, or an AI-driven IoT edge node, you’ll find the hardware synergy between Nordic and the i.MX93 is remarkably fluid.

Long-Term Availability and Trust

Embedded and industrial clients expect stability and predictability over the long term. Nordic Semiconductor guarantees extended product lifecycles, ensuring that designs built today will still be supported tomorrow.

Our long-standing collaboration with Nordic has also proven their commitment to consistent supply chains and dependable technical support. They’re not just a supplier - they’re a partner we can trust as we continue to develop future generations of our platforms.
